The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) offers David Sainsbury Scholarships to a limited number of students on UEA’s MSc in Global Plant Health, funding research into plant disease, pests, and agricultural sustainability. Unlike scholarships that require a separate application, this one is automatic: getting an offer on the course puts you into competitive consideration for funding.

Two Award Tiers
- Full Scholarship
- Full tuition fee (£36,000 international / £16,000 UK, 2026-27 rates)
- Maintenance grant at the UKRI postgraduate researcher stipend rate (£20,780 in 2025-26; 2026-27 figure not yet confirmed)
- Additional £4,000 for travel costs, on submission of valid economy-class travel receipts
- Eligibility: national of, or domiciled in, a country classified as least-developed, low-income, or lower-middle-income by the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list
- 50% Fee Scholarship
- Covers 50% of tuition fees (50% of £16,000 UK or £36,000 international), minus any other award covering more than half your fees
- Eligibility: applicants who are not nationals of or domiciled in a DAC-listed low-income country (this includes the UK and other higher-income countries)
Which tier you are considered for depends entirely on your nationality/domicile under the DAC classification, not on a separate choice you make.
Eligibility (Both Tiers)
- Hold an offer of a place on the UEA MSc in Global Plant Health
- Meet the course’s standard academic entry requirements
- Not already receiving full-fee sponsorship from an outside body or government (government/educational loans requiring repayment don’t affect eligibility)
- Not enrolled in another UEA scholarship simultaneously: the two are mutually exclusive
The Return-Home Commitment
This is a real condition of the award, not a formality: scholars from low- to middle-income countries are expected to return to their country of origin within five (5) years of completing their studies, to work on addressing plant disease through science, agriculture, or community advancement. Scholars from higher-income countries are expected to contribute to addressing plant disease in low- to middle-income countries in some way. Eligible applicants must submit a written statement of intent detailing a credible plan for this; it is a required document, not optional.
How to Apply
- Apply for a place on UEA’s MSc in Global Plant Health: this is your only application; there’s no separate scholarship form at this stage
- If offered a place after interview, you’re automatically considered for the scholarship on a competitive basis
- Evaluation for the scholarship uses the same criteria as your course application: academic achievement, and demonstrated knowledge or potential in molecular biology, genetics, molecular interactions, bioinformatics/data science, laboratory skills, and independent study
- If eligible, submit your written statement of intent (the return-home/impact plan described above)
- Apply well before the deadline – scholarships are awarded throughout the year on a rolling, competitive basis as applications come in, not held until the final deadline
