The University of Twente Scholarship (UTS) offers €3,000-€22,000 per year to excellent non-EU/EEA students admitted to a master’s program at UT. It is genuinely selective: UT states explicitly that recipients typically come from the top 5-10% of their graduating class.

Important: This is not a tuition fee waiver
Unlike some scholarships that pay your tuition directly, UTS is a compensation payment for study-related costs that you receive and manage yourself. It is up to you how to allocate it between tuition and living costs. Before applying, check UT’s tuition fees and cost-of-living estimates to confirm the award realistically covers your total costs, since UTS is explicitly not intended as full funding.
Eligibility
- Non-EU/EEA nationality (Switzerland is also excluded, along with anyone eligible for the Dutch statutory tuition fee rate)
- (Provisionally) admitted to a qualifying UT master’s program for September 2027 entry
- Have a UT student number
- Have not already graduated from a UT undergraduate or graduate program
- Meet Netherlands entry visa requirements, where applicable
- IELTS Academic 6.5 (or TOEFL iBT 90), with a minimum 6.0 IELTS/20 TOEFL on the speaking subscore
- Not eligible for a Dutch study loan (DUO)
- Among the top 5-10% of your graduating class at your home university
Not eligible: Dutch nationals, current UT students, Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) programs, and pre-master’s students (including those continuing from a UTS-funded pre-master’s into a master’s).
Additional Award: Kipaji Scholarship
UTS recipients starting in September 2027 may also be considered for the separate Kipaji Scholarship, which has its own additional requirements. You must apply for and be eligible for UTS first, then indicate interest in the Kipaji Scholarship within your UTS application motivation.
How to Apply
- Apply for and receive a (conditional) admission letter for a qualifying UT master’s program. This is a separate process from the scholarship application
- Once you have your UT student number, apply for the UTS scholarship itself
- Include a clear scholarship motivation statement: mention interest in the Kipaji Scholarship here if applicable
- Submit before the deadline (1 April 2027, 16:00 CET, for the 2027/28 cycle)
- Allow up to 8 weeks for admission results, and expect UTS results by the first week of May 2027

Eligible Master’s Programs
UTS applies to most UT master’s programs, spanning Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Business Administration, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Health Sciences, Industrial Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Psychology, Public Administration, Robotics, Sustainable Energy Technology, and others; except programs at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), which aren’t covered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are EU/EEA students eligible?
No: UT states this explicitly. This scholarship is exclusively for non-EU/EEA students.
Does UTS cover full tuition?
No: it is a lump-sum compensation for study-related costs (€3,000–€22,000), which you allocate yourself. Confirm you can cover remaining costs before applying.
Is there still a February and May application round?
No: that two-round structure has changed. The current cycle has a single deadline: 1 April 2027 for September 2027 entry.
Can I apply if I’m on a Dutch statutory tuition fee rate due to my residence permit?
No: even non-EU/EEA students who qualify for the statutory (lower) tuition rate are excluded from UTS.
